Saving of current distribution profile of virtual machines
The distribution of the virtual machines to the ESX Servers currently mapped in the VMware Virtual Center can be saved as a profile (distribution pattern) with the touch of a button.
Saved profiles can be modified later on of course by assigning a VM to a different ESX Server. It is also possible to create a new profile from scratch by assigning the VMs to the ESX servers manually.
One click for any number of profiles
There is no limit to the number of profiles that can be stored in IC-SchED. These profiles can then be loaded at the touch of a button. Once a profile has been loaded, the distribution that has been saved is activated during operation via VMotion. This means that while the VMs are moved between the ESX servers, they continue to run and the end users can continue to use their applications.
Easy handling by assignment to resource pools
From version ESX 3 virtual machines can also be assigned to resource pools instead of single ESX Servers. In this case the VM is not assigned to a single ESX Server, but to a pool comprising a host of ESX Servers.
IC-SchED in use
- Maintenance
Clearing one or more ESX Servers for maintenance purposes is simple and fast, with the touch of a button.
- Resource distribution
The individual virtual machines have different resource requirements during the day than at night. In the daytime the online production systems (ERP, Notes, databases, etc.) require IC-SchED capacity than the offline systems (backup systems, IC-SchEDuling systems, batch applications). At night the resource requirements are just the opposite.
- Green IT
During the night the resource requirements for all VMs are lower than during the day. That's why it is a good idea to migrate the virtual machines to the smallest possible number of servers in the evening in order to shut down unused servers and thus save electricity and cooling power. In the morning the ESX Servers are rebooted and the VMs are redistributed to the entire ESX farm as the IC-SchEDuled profiles are launched.
